On Monday, part of the Santa Cruz wharf collapsed, sending three people into the choppy ocean. Lifeguards were able to rescue two victims, while a third managed to self-rescue.
City officials issued a warning for residents to avoid low-lying areas because of debris and strong ocean conditions following the wharf incident. They advised against going to beaches during the high surf advisory.
As the Santa Cruz Fire and Police Departments responded to the incident, the wharf was closed to public access, effective from 1 p.m., ensuring that emergency personnel could navigate freely across blocked traffic.
