Santa Cruz surfing legend Peter Mel has been invited to compete in the prestigious 2024-25 The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, which showcases the best big-wave surfers in the world. This event, named after the renowned Hawaiian surf hero Eddie Aikau, only runs when the ocean swells reach a minimum of 20 feet, making it both rare and exhilarating. The competition window runs from Dec. 14 through March 13, allowing hopeful competitors to track the waves all winter long.
Peter Mel expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, 'You always hope for the best... It keeps you focused on watching swells throughout the winter.' His experience has been extensive, having competed in the Eddie Aikau since 1997. Luke Shepardson, the reigning champion of The Eddie Aikau, is looking to defend his title against a strong competitors' lineup, which includes past champions like Kelly Slater and John John Florence.
