Three Bay Area cemeteries, including Skyview Memorial Lawn and Evergreen Cemetery, were ordered to halt operations due to mismanagement and failure to comply with state regulations. A judge ruled in favor of the state after investigating issues such as property neglect and delayed reports. Owner Buck Kamphausen plans to appeal, asserting that a former employee was responsible for the operational issues. While Kamphausen and his partners continue to manage the cemeteries, the state now controls the trust funds, hindering maintenance efforts significantly.
"We lost in the court because the judge did not even give me the time to testify," said Kamphausen, who plans to appeal the decision.
Kamphausen claims issues began with a former employee's neglect of duties, leading to the state's intervention and accusations of mismanagement.
"They've taken over six cemeteries... nothing's been done, they're run down, it's just a mess," Kamphausen stated, criticizing the state's oversight.
Since the state has ceased control, Kamphausen contends that "it has provided little to no money for maintenance" of the cemeteries.
