Just eight monkeys remain at large after a breakout at the Alpha Genesis facility in South Carolina, with 35 monkeys having been recaptured in recent efforts.
Authorities have confirmed that all recaptured monkeys are healthy, while efforts continue at the Alpha Genesis compound to lure the remaining monkeys back using food.
The Rhesus macaques involved in the escape have been bred at the facility for research purposes, sharing about 93% of their DNA with humans.
Public health officials reassure that the escaped monkeys pose no risk and advise people to avoid the area, keeping a safe distance as they are skittish.
