O'Dowd counselors guide students on their journey to college
Briefly

"We consistently send 98% of our students on to college, which is quite impressive considering that The New York Times and The Atlantic have recently reported that the number of qualified college applicants has gone up by 150% in the last 20 years," said President Kim Walsh, who began serving O'Dowd as a parent on the Board of Regents in 2010. This statistic highlights the effectiveness of their college-preparatory system amidst growing competition.
"Our curriculum as a whole, and our counseling department in particular, excel in supporting students to explore their interests, articulate their values, and find purpose in giving back to their communities - which in turn makes our students really strong candidates for university admissions offices," said Kim Walsh. This showcases how the school's approach nurtures well-rounded individuals.
"Most 9th graders don't know where they want to go to college, and that's OK," said Meredith Parry, O'Dowd's associate director of college counseling. This reflects a compassionate and supportive perspective on the uncertainties students face when starting high school.
"We support students to take on new challenges and gain a foundation of self-advocacy, responsibility, and independence," Meredith said. "That intentional groundwork prepares all of our students for greater success in their academic pursuits and beyond." This illustrates the proactive strategy of building essential life skills early.
