Oakland Police Shoot Suspect Who Dragged Officer With His Car

"According to department policy, the two Oakland officers will now be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident. Last week, Oakland officials announced the launch of a new pilot program to install new street barriers on the side streets in The Blade, including 9th Avenue, to deter the sex-work trade and impede cars traveling on these streets. That program is set to begin in June, and those barriers are not yet installed."

Two Oakland police officers attempted to stop a suspect driving on 9th Avenue in The Blade around 3:15 a.m. Friday. The reasons for the stop were not disclosed. Officers reported seeing a gun in plain view in the suspect’s car. The suspect then began dragging one officer and pinning another between the suspect vehicle and a parked car. One officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect and causing a non-fatal injury. Both officers and the suspect were hospitalized. A white sedan was later seen at the scene with crime scene tape around it. The officers were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. A pilot program to install street barriers in The Blade to deter sex work and impede cars was announced and scheduled to begin in June, with barriers not yet installed.
