An investigation by Oakland's City Auditor reveals that the city has been overpaying for overtime since 2018, totaling at least $1.66 million for 526 employees. This excessive payment stems from an erroneous calculation method that doesn't align with federal laws. The Finance Department and other city bodies couldn't explain the discrepancies. City Auditor Michael Houston emphasized the importance of addressing this waste, especially amid financial scrutiny. The investigation was prompted by an anonymous whistleblower complaint, highlighting the auditor's role in ensuring efficiency and accountability in city operations.
For at least six years, Oakland has been paying more than it needs to for overtime work to some of its employees, according to an investigation by the City Auditor.
Between January 2018 and May 2024, the city paid at least $1,667,650 in excess pay for overtime work to 526 employees in the Transportation and Public Works departments.
City Auditor Michael Houston stated that this issue of excessive overtime pay 'warrants the City's immediate attention because taxpayers have essentially been incurring significant costs that were never approved.'
The investigation was launched after his office received an anonymous whistleblower complaint in July 2023.
