Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 715 and Senate Bill 48 to create a state office of civil rights, an antisemitism prevention coordinator, and four additional coordinator roles addressing religious, racial, ethnic, gender, and anti-LGBTQ discrimination in public schools. The laws require investigations when claims arise that students were subjected to lessons or materials amounting to discrimination. The measures were supported by Jewish organizations and lobbied for by the Oakland Jewish Alliance and JPAC. The laws drew criticism from free speech advocates and may affect Oakland Unified School District amid a federal investigation into a Gaza-related teach-in.
