Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao highlighted the links between a recall effort against her and the interests of business figures tied to coal shipments, emphasizing a $2 billion investment from hedge fund Farallon Capital Management.
During a recent press conference, Thao stated, 'That one executive hedge fund and his company has invested two billion dollars - no, I did not make a mistake by saying billion, $2 billion - just this year into coal, across the whole world.'
Thao's allegations against hedge fund manager Philip Dreyfuss point to large-scale investments in coal by Farallon Capital Management, which recently financed several major coal projects internationally.
While it's evident Farallon has significant coal investments, it remains uncertain whether Philip Dreyfuss directly influences the hedge fund's fossil fuel strategies, as he operates within the arbitrage group.
