"The "Office of Homelessness Solutions" will oversee the city's work on encampments and shelters, and keep track of data - efforts that are currently carried out by different departments in the city - according to Lee's announcement this week. The central office will unite "our talented city teams, community partners, and regional allies under one strategic vision," Lee said in a press release Monday."
"Money from the county's Measure W will fund the new office. County officials have spent the last few months debating how to spend nearly $2 billion in revenue from the 2020 tax measure, eventually deciding that 80% should go to homelessness services and housing. Oakland is expected to receive a little over half of the money. With the new resources, "Oakland is positioned to lead the region in increasing lasting solutions," said Lee, who advocated for Measure W money to be spent on homelessness."
A new Office of Homelessness Solutions will centralize Oakland's work on encampments, shelters, and data currently handled by multiple departments. The office will unite city teams, community partners, and regional allies under one strategic vision and will be funded by county Measure W revenue. Sasha Hauswald will serve as interim chief homelessness solutions officer and establish the office with eight to nine dedicated staff, including two additional leadership roles alongside the existing homelessness team. The office will implement a five-point plan focused on prevention, street outreach, rapid rental support, shelter and transitional facilities, and permanent housing development.
