Last public meeting held before Oakland Unified votes on budget that could close several schools
Briefly

Oakland Unified School District is grappling with a severe budget crisis that may lead to significant school closures and staff reductions. During a recent meeting, parents expressed their discontent with proposed cuts, insisting they aren't necessary. With a projected deficit of at least $95 million, the school board will decide on budget proposals later this month. Some community members, including former board member Jody London, argue that consolidations can actually enhance educational experiences for students. However, the ongoing lack of consensus among stakeholders highlights the urgency and complexity of managing the district's budget.
If you look at Elmhurst Middle School for example, they consolidated two schools and now the families and the faculty talk about how they have many more elective choices there are more after school sports activities for the students and other things like that.
I'm disappointed and I do have to agree, there's not going to be anything other than the day of vote now, and to have a last minute wordsmithing on a $95 million package, is the worst kind of practice that I had hoped our board had moved away from.
