The U.S. Justice Department announced a significant civil damages settlement exceeding $100 million from Singapore-based companies Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine for the fatal Francis Scott Key Bridge collision.
This resolution ensures that the costs of the federal government's cleanup efforts in the Fort McHenry Channel are borne by Grace Ocean and Synergy and not the American taxpayer. Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer emphasized the importance of this settlement.
Grace Ocean Private and Synergy Marine Private Limited had sought to limit their liability under the federal Limitation of Liability Act of 1851, arguing for just $43.7 million based on the ship's value and cargo revenue.
An investigation indicated that the Dali ship suffered from persistent electrical issues, experiencing blackouts shortly before the tragic accident that resulted in the bridge collapse and six casualties.
