Maximus Simmons, a junior at Oakland High and a student director on the school board, expressed the pride of youth voters: "I’ve heard many times that our generation is soft, weak, and pampered. In reality, we are resilient, open-minded, brave, but better than all of those, we aren’t scared to speak our truth. To my fellow youth voters, I just have one question: How does it feel to be a part of history?"
The youth vote movement began in 2019 after students witnessed school board budget cuts. They recognized their voices were not considered, prompting them to push for voting rights.
The youth vote coalition aims to empower students with a youth voter education curriculum and registration drives, ensuring they understand how to engage in the democratic process.
