"The Oakland Police Department issued an update Monday afternoon regarding the in-custody death of Douglas Martin, a former Oakland Raider and Tampa Bay Buccaneer whom police say was involved in a residential break-in over the weekend. According to OPD, Martin, 36, of Stockton, died after suffering a medical emergency and getting into a "brief struggle" with police while he was breaking into a home in the East Oakland hills."
"Around 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a report of a residential break-in near the 11000 block of Ettrick Street, according to a statement from OPD. Police have not released the address of the home that Martin allegedly broke into. Public records show that one of Martin's family members lives on the same street. Officers were also notified of a person who was experiencing a "medical emergency," whom they believed to be the same person breaking into the house."
"Officers arrived and engaged in a "brief struggle" while trying to detain Martin, according to OPD. After Martin was taken into custody, police said, he became unresponsive. Paramedics arrived, rendered medical aid, and drove Martin to a nearby hospital. "Unfortunately, the individual later died at the hospital," OPD wrote. The cause of death has not yet been released. The officer or officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave, Oakland officials said."
