Fire displaces 100 people at apartment complex near UC Riverside
A large fire spread quickly through an apartment complex at 3996 Iowa Avenue in Riverside on Friday morning. Firefighters arrived to flames shooting through the roof after the fire was first reported at 11:13 a.m. at University Riverside Gardens. About 50 of 112 units were affected, and officials estimated around 115 people were displaced. All residents were evacuated and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was unclear, and ongoing fire risk and structural condition prevented a fire investigator from starting an investigation. Fire units from Riverside County, San Bernardino County, and Ontario Fire assisted in suppressing the flames and protecting the building’s integrity. The property is not owned or operated by UC Riverside, but the university worked to determine whether any UCR students lived there and to provide resources.
""While the affected property is not owned or operated by UCR, the university is working to determine how many UCR students reside at that location and provide resources and basic needs," a spokesperson for the university said in a statement."
