Oakland voters have approved Measure A, increasing the sales tax from 10.25% to 10.75%. This decision, supported by 64% of voters, aims to raise up to $30 million annually for the city's general fund, primarily to support police and fire services. The city faces a structural deficit exacerbated by recent budget cuts and layoffs. Although previous tax measures received strong support, enthusiasm for this sales tax increase was more muted. Both mayoral candidates endorsed the measure amidst campaign support from local unions.
The sales tax hike is projected to generate up to $30 million in additional revenue for the city each year and will expire after a decade.
The Oakland City Council agreed in January to put the sales tax proposal on the special election ballot after financial staff warned that Oakland needs new sources of revenue.
