Alameda briefs: USS Hornet's Veterans Day commemoration on Monday
Briefly

During the Veterans Day commemoration at the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum, historian Steve Minnear will reveal how the Bay Area played a vital role in transporting sailors to the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He will discuss how three largely forgotten Navy bases shipped over 350,000 personnel, shedding light on the local contribution to the war efforts and the crucial operations involving the USS Hornet.
Guest speaker Steve Minnear’s presentation, titled 'Before Anchors Aweigh,' educates attendees on the significant but often overlooked history of how sailors were mobilized for World War II service, including Operation Magic Carpet which saw many sailors return home, directly linking the area's military past with the larger narrative of the war.
The USS Hornet Museum's Veterans Day event includes various activities such as a wreath-laying ceremony, guest presentations, and a flyover by the USS Hornet Memorial Squadron, all demonstrating a commitment to honoring veterans and educating the public about the vital role the Bay Area played in naval operations.
Alongside other commemorative activities, the museum is partnering with the Alameda County Veterans Commission to promote Operation Greenlight, lighting up the USS Hornet to support veterans, and offers a kayak tour showcasing the Bay Area's military history.
