Two men in Rochester, New York, died from a rare fungal infection contracted through the use of bat feces as fertilizer for their marijuana plants.
Despite initial treatment with anti-fungals, the 59-year-old man ultimately required comfort care due to severe breathing difficulties as a result of histoplasmosis.
The 64-year-old man, who had a history of tobacco use and previously underwent a bypass surgery, also contracted histoplasmosis after exposure to bat guano.
Both men likely inhaled spores from the bat feces while fertilizing their cannabis, leading to pneumonia, a serious infection not widely recognized in this context.
