The number of data sources is growing. The number of use cases is growing. The maintenance to keep existing things 'alive' is not going down; at best, it stays constant.
Here comes the data contract. Although the term is relatively new, the concept is old. Data contracts define a link between the data producer and one or more consumers of the data.
