In 2024, Privacy International made strides in advocating for consumer rights and data privacy. Key victories include the European Parliament's adoption of a Directive that empowers consumers by mandating longer security updates for devices. Additionally, Amazon's merger with iRobot was successfully halted due to concerns about competition and data privacy. The European Court of Human Rights also ruled against Russian legislation that violated human rights regarding encrypted communications, showcasing an ongoing commitment to safeguard personal data across various jurisdictions.
As a result of our advocacy, the Directive reflects our demands, including that consumers will have information about the minimum period during which devices should receive security updates, accessible through a harmonised label.
This win shows Big Tech's power can be constrained, and together we can stop this practice.
