Meta's "Consent Or Pay" Model Challenged In EU

EU rules stipulate that users should be given a choice on whether their data can be collected and used for targeted ads. And, in an attempt to comply, Meta is this month starting to offer Facebook and Instagram users in the region the choice of agreeing to accept tracking and targeting, or pay a monthly subscription for an ad-free version of the sites.
"The choice the tech giant is currently providing to consumers is unfair and illegal - the millions of European users of Facebook and Instagram deserve far better than this," says Ursula Pachl, BEUC deputy director general.
