The European Commission found that Meta broke E.U. antitrust laws by closely linking Facebook with its classified-ads business, giving it an unfair distribution advantage.
The commission accused Meta of imposing unfair trading conditions on third parties that seek to advertise, allowing channeling of data to boost Facebook Marketplace.
Margrethe Vestager stated that the conduct amounted to "abusive practices" that gave Meta a significant competitive advantage, warranting immediate actions to halt it.
Meta argues the decision shields large incumbents, claiming that Facebook Marketplace meets consumer demand innovatively and conveniently against the realities of the European market.
