The EU Commission ruled that Meta's ad-free subscription plan in Europe, which allows users to opt out of ads and data tracking by paying €9.99 per month, does not comply with data protection laws.
The Commission states that Meta's 'pay or consent' advertising model does not meet the necessary requirements under Article 5(2) of the DMA, as it does not provide users with the option for a service that uses less personal data or to freely consent to the use of their data.
