Driving instructor Edward Sheehy of Shalom in Co Carlow has paid €148,000 due to an investigation revealing income tax under-declaration and VAT non-declaration. His settlement included almost €94,000 in tax, with €27,000 each in interest and penalties, highlighting the serious repercussions of tax violations, particularly in the wake of heightened enforcement by Revenue.
Consultant Brian Murphy from Carrigaline topped the latest settlements with €845,000, which stemmed from income tax under-declaration. He paid around €420,000 in tax, €111,000 in interest, and nearly €315,000 in penalties, emphasizing the significant consequences that professionals face for failing to meet their tax obligations.
William Hale, a retired ornament dealer, was penalized €764,000 by the courts for tax under-declaration. Furthermore, Una McLean and solicitor Sean Clarke faced penalties of €303,000 and €600,000 respectively, underlining that tax compliance is crucial across various sectors and not limited to active businesses.
The Revenue Commissioners indicated that between March and June, 31 cases related to tobacco smuggling and excise offences led to court fines of €60,000 and several sentences, including a suspended three-year sentence. This reflects ongoing vigilance against smuggling and the enforcement of tax laws.
