Sam's Club sees initial success with digital checkout
Briefly

Sam's Club recently experimented with a store in Grapevine, Texas, eliminating checkout lanes to promote their Scan and Go technology. CFO Todd Sears witnessed the positive reactions of customers, especially seniors learning to use the new system. While the Grapevine location serves as a testing ground, Sam's Club is not yet committed to removing all registers. Future store remodels will consider customer preferences, though Sears envisions a future without registers at all, hinting at a significant potential shift in retail operations.
There was a couple, probably in their 70s, who couldn't figure out how to do it; and so I approached them... The smile he got on his face when he scanned and was able to just slide his finger and check out, it was priceless.
As we remodel clubs, just like we did in Grapevine, we will look at the member base, we will talk to them, we will look at the environment, and we will make those decisions.
If we fast forward into the future, if you go far enough, there probably is no register. It's just a matter of timing and how you navigate through that.
