Uber and Tesla have launched ride-hailing services using autonomous vehicles in several US cities. However, delivering food via autonomous vehicles presents challenges distinct from passenger transport, according to DoorDash CEO Tony Xu. He emphasized the necessity for an end-to-end delivery system, as precise hand-offs between restaurants and their vehicles are crucial for successful deliveries. Despite these hurdles, Xu noted that DoorDash has successfully piloted some deliveries in certain cities using wheeled robots and expresses enthusiasm for developing autonomous delivery solutions.
Autonomous cars are already shuttling riders around some US cities thanks to a partnership between Uber and Waymo, as well as Tesla's own robotaxi offering.
Deliveries require a more precise hand-off between the restaurant and the vehicle, requiring companies like DoorDash to solve for the end-to-end system.
Xu said DoorDash's experiments with autonomous delivery 'have gone great' and that autonomous delivery is 'something we're very excited about.'
Robotaxis need an 'end-to-end' system to make deliveries feasible, Xu said.
