Amazon is introducing AI-powered features to Alexa, leading to concerns about increased advertisements on devices. The Alexa+ subscription, which costs $19.99 per month without a Prime account, is optional. Currently, limited ads are already present, and Amazon's chief hinted that more advertisements are planned. Users have expressed dissatisfaction, sharing scenarios of unwanted ads interrupting normal usage. Some have vowed to stop using Alexa if ad interruptions become prevalent, indicating strong resistance to the concept of ads on the platform.
"There will be opportunities, as people are engaging in more multiturn conversations [with Alexa Plus], to have advertising play a role to help people find discovery, and also as a lever to drive revenue," said Andy Jassy.
"When you tell it to turn on your lights, it'll turn on the lights and then give a 15 second advertisement for other lights you could buy on Amazon.com," joked a Reddit user.
"I already stopped watching prime because of the ads. I'm fine dropping Alexa too," stated a frustrated user.
"All I want it to do is provide random facts when I ask about them, play the music I ask it to and adjust the household settings I tell it to," said another dissatisfied user.
