Application layer DDoS attacks are skyrocketing - here's why
Briefly

In Q2 2025, application layer DDoS attacks increased significantly, with a 74% rise compared to the prior year. Financial services firms were the largest targets, suffering 43.6% of total attacks. eCommerce and ICT services were also affected, accounting for 22.6% and 18.2%, respectively. A record-breaking botnet of 4.6 million infected devices emerged, surpassing previous records. Network and transport layer DDoS attacks also increased, with a notable rise in attacks exceeding 1 Gbps. The most common application layer attacks were Request Rate Patterns, primarily targeting online services.
The explosive growth of application-layer DDoS attacks is a direct consequence of the rapidly expanding number of vulnerable devices with fast internet connections.
The size of botnets we observe today would have been unimaginable just a year ago. An attack launched by a botnet of this scale, if not properly mitigated, can generate tens of millions of requests, overwhelming online services until websites become inaccessible, critical transactions fail, and entire digital operations come to a halt.
