Amazon's latest grocery expansion pushed supermarkets toward Instacart, its incoming CEO said
"I think with a lot of our retail partners, I was their first call when that announcement happened,"
"They were trying to understand, okay, how do we react competitively?"
"opportunity to get deeper, to use our technology in more ways to help retailers compete."
Amazon expanded same-day delivery of perishable groceries to 1,000 cities and towns, with plans to more than double that number by year-end. Instacart provides delivery and services to grocers including Aldi and Costco. Grocers reached out to Instacart for help bolstering delivery options and competitive responses after Amazon's expansion. Instacart used the increased interest to deepen partnerships and deploy technology across retailers. Instacart is growing its advertising business and implementing electronic shelf tags. In markets where Amazon tested new delivery offerings, Instacart's gross transaction value remained consistent with its national performance. Retailers including Walmart have accelerated delivery speed, increasing competition in fast grocery fulfillment.
