This Dining Room Makeover Features a Hidden Surprise in the Walls
Briefly

Homeowners Miranda Caldwell and Jeff Heckbert transformed their dining space by reconfiguring the layout to include booth seating and a wall, improving functionality and privacy. Previously awkward due to the guest powder room's placement, the new design created more storage and a cozy atmosphere for dining. They embraced DIY, even incorporating a unique secret cubby behind a hinged picture frame. Despite challenges with dry walling, they created a distinctive and inviting dining nook, focusing on comfort and style for their family and guests.
We tried many iterations of trying to make this open-concept dining room work, from different shaped dining tables to custom storage solutions built by Jeff, but it wasn’t until we realized that if we added a wall, we could have more storage, more privacy, and a cozier spot to dine with guests.
I think we underestimated how much patience is required in taping and mudding drywall.
The picture frame is on a hinge and opens to reveal a small niche in the drywall where you can put little treats or trinkets. It’s a fun little party trick.
