A drunken diner in China suffered severe injuries after impaling his head on a 15-inch metal rod while dining with colleagues. The rod penetrated his mouth and narrowly missed critical areas of his brain. Colleagues quickly called for medical assistance, and he underwent a complicated 10-hour surgery to remove the rod. Special caution was necessary due to the risk of infection from the bacteria on the rod. After the surgery, he spent several days in intensive care; his vision was impaired, but his verbal and motor skills improved remarkably post-surgery.
This foreign object carried a lot of bacteria. The path it penetrated the patient involves his mouth, eyes and brain. Any small, careless operation might lead to a fatal problem.
His colleagues were left horrified as blood poured out of his mouth, and they quickly called an ambulance, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
