When Sites Need to Walk Away
A Pew Research Center report finds 26% of pages from 2013–2023 are no longer accessible. Data scientists using the Wayback Machine report 16% of those pages are restored. They also report 56% are preserved before disappearing. The remaining portion implies pages neither restored nor preserved. A local mountain biking trail resource, BendTrails, plans to go dark on June 1 if no community group, business, or individual acquires its assets. The site’s assets are listed for about $80,000–$90,000.
"Will The BendTrails Website Be Taken Offline? We're open to the possibility of a community group, business, or individual acquiring BendTrails' assets and keeping the site online - but if that doesn't happen, the site will be going dark on June 1st."
