The recent eruption in southwestern Iceland marks the continuation of intense geological activity in the Reykjanes Peninsula, where eruptions have been recorded since December 2020. In total, since 2021, there have been eight volcanic events, highlighting a dramatic shift in what was previously a dormant area for about 800 years.
Scientists predict that the currently active volcanic zone in Iceland will continue to produce eruptions every few months for years or even decades to come. 'With every eruption, we see new unforeseen events,' said Matthew J. Roberts, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of volcanic activity.
Tourism and local life have been significantly impacted by the eruptions. The Blue Lagoon spa evacuated guests and closed as a precaution. Additionally, the nearby town of Grindavik has seen a dramatic decline in residents since January due to the ongoing volcanic threat.
