The U.S. government has seized an airplane linked to Nicolas Maduro, leader of Venezuela, due to violations of U.S. sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on his regime.
The jet, a Dassault Falcon 900EX, was purchased through a shell company and smuggled out of the U.S. for use by Maduro and his associates, highlighting intentional circumvention of regulations.
Matthew S. Axelrod emphasized that the seizure serves as a warning that aircraft acquired illegally from the U.S. for sanctioned Venezuelan officials will not go unaddressed.
The operation, led by the Justice Department with assistance from the Homeland Security and Commerce Departments, reflects the Biden administration's commitment to holding Maduro accountable.
