More than 18 million American workers described themselves as digital nomads in 2024, a 147 percent increase since 2019. Spain ranks highest for digital nomads thanks to visa benefits including a one-year visa convertible into three years, a third-place ranking for tech and innovation, and relatively low visa costs. Europe supplies nine of the top ten destinations, with strong infrastructure, favorable visa policies, and pathways to citizenship in countries such as the Netherlands, Norway, and Estonia. Romania, Malta, Portugal, Canada, Hungary, and France also rank highly. Three jurisdictions grant direct citizenship for nomad time; 15 offer residency pathways leading toward eventual citizenship.
