The remains were so badly decomposed after weeks in the water that identification by face, fingerprints or other physical clues was impossible. Thus, another body bag tagged Name Unknown was delivered to a little-known squad of investigators who identify New York City's nameless dead.
Everybody deserves to have their name in death. They are unidentified, but they are not forgotten. The cold-case unit is dedicated to identifying the roughly 1,250 nameless corpses dating back to the late 1980s.
In a wired age, it is rare that someone dies whose identity is truly unknown. With advances in forensic science and national databases, the issue has declined to historically low levels, yet stubborn unidentified bodies persist.
In New York City, of a population of 8.2 million, some people come to get lost, thus creating a challenge for investigators tasked with naming the dead.
