In 'Voice for the Voiceless,' the Dalai Lama chronicles his challenging negotiations with Chinese leaders spanning decades. His narrative, moving from early encounters with Mao Zedong to recent communications with Xi Jinping, reflects on preserving Tibetan culture and autonomy amidst increasing Chinese assertiveness. The book's release comes during critical times for Tibetans, as the Dalai Lama approaches his 90th birthday, aiming to inspire future advocates for the Tibetan cause. His reflections emphasize hope for peaceful resolutions and lessons from his experiences with Beijing, providing guidance for subsequent generations.
The book arrives at a particularly tenuous moment for the Tibetan people, with an ascendant China flexing its military and economic muscle around the world.
Despite all the suffering and destruction, we still hold fast to the hope for a peaceful resolution of our struggle for freedom and dignity, the Dalai Lama said.
My hope is that the book will stimulate fresh thoughts and conversations today and provide a framework for the future of Tibet even after I am gone.
Drawing on the lessons learned from my decades of engagement with Beijing, the book also aims to offer some thoughts on what might be the way forward.
