A recent study by the BBC explored the effectiveness of dark mode in reducing power consumption on older LCD screens. Despite common perceptions that dark modes save energy by displaying darker backgrounds, the findings revealed that most users increased brightness significantly when using dark mode, often resulting in higher power consumption than with light mode. The study, part of the International Workshop on Low Carbon Computing, highlights the need to evaluate user behavior and sustainability practices in light of such findings.
Our findings suggest that the energy efficiency benefits of dark mode are not as straightforward as commonly believed for display energy.
Faced with a dark mode version of the site, 80 percent of participants turned the brightness up significantly higher than in light mode.
