Rhiane Fatinikun founded Black Girls Hike in 2019 to address the racial disparity in British hiking, aiming to make outdoor spaces more inclusive for all.
Ms. Fatinikun noted that many Black women feel invisible in natural spaces, stating it’s sad to see how they go through life not being fully seen.
While recognizing the struggles of feeling excluded, Ms. Fatinikun expressed happiness that participants of Black Girls Hike felt free to be themselves in the outdoors.
She emphasized that the hiking challenge wasn’t about competition, but rather about encouraging women to find their personal best and enjoy the experience.
