Opinion | Asheville, Tampa and Lessons From Hurricane Helene
Briefly

The devastation of Western North Carolina's arts and crafts communities, like the River Arts District of Asheville, will be set right by community action and government funding. Government action is aiding the restoration of beauty. In this election, one candidate heaps scorn on government action. It's worth remembering that our tax dollars—federal, state and local—are a powerful way the cost of catastrophe is shared in order to make restoration possible.
The recovery day by day is amazing, because of neighbors pulling together along with government workers and money. Of course, some recovery will take much longer. And climate disruption—which one candidate claims is a hoax—will require changes. Leadership matters, especially in a crisis. Thank you, President Biden and Gov. Roy Cooper, for acting quickly and skillfully.
