Namibia's decision to cull 723 wild animals, including elephants, stems from a severe hunger crisis affecting nearly half of its population amid unprecedented drought conditions.
Rose Mwebaza from the UN noted that sustainable harvesting of wild animal populations can provide essential food sources for communities facing severe hunger and drought.
The current drought in Southern Africa is particularly devastating, with more than 30 million people affected, according to the U.N. World Food Program.
Juliane Zeidler of the World Wildlife Fund emphasized the dire situation, stating there is no food available for either people or animals in Namibia.
