A panel of 14 neonatal and pediatric specialists has raised significant doubts about the conviction of British nurse Lucy Letby, found guilty of murdering seven babies. Dr. Shoo Lee, the chair of the panel, announced that their independent review found no evidence of malfeasance in any of the 17 cases involved. Instead, they highlighted serious medical errors and management issues in the neonatal unit, suggesting that some infant deaths were preventable. The experts emphasized the complicated health conditions of the babies, questioning the integrity of the earlier trial findings.
Our conclusion was there was no medical evidence to support malfeasance causing injury in any of the 17 cases in the trial, Dr. Lee said.
The panel underlined the serious pre-existing conditions of some of the babies, and in several cases, the specialists found significant errors in the treatment or care of the infants.
