A regional tournament soccer player, Jose Hugo De la Cruz Meza, tragically died from a lightning strike during a game in Huancayo, Peru, highlighting storm dangers.
Despite the worsening storm leading to a game pause, players were struck by lightning while leaving the field, resulting in one fatality and injuries to others.
Player Juan Chocca recounted the moment, saying, 'I was just walking out with Hugo hugging each other. I took three steps after letting go of him, and the lightning struck us.'
