Internet Access Fees Increase; Consumers Not Interested in Data Caps: Survey
Briefly

According to the internet fee survey of consumers in California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania, the average internet bill at signup was $81, but today those same consumers are paying an average of $98. This reflects a concerning trend where prices have climbed significantly, up from similar rates observed in April 2024, when the average was $77 at signup and $89 currently. Such increases in costs highlight the financial burden many consumers face.
Despite the rising costs, many consumers remain hesitant to accept data caps as a means to lower bills. A significant majority, around 72%, reported that they have never encountered a data cap, while 14% were unsure if their Internet Service Provider (ISP) had imposed one. This indicates a lack of understanding among consumers regarding certain aspects of their internet billing and potential options for managing costs.
The survey reveals that an overwhelming 76% of respondents want the U.S. government to impose limitations on what broadband service providers can charge. Additionally, 87% expressed a desire for Congress to reinstate the Affordable Connectivity Program, showing a clear demand for regulatory measures aimed at ensuring fair pricing for internet access in an increasingly challenging economic landscape.
