The Greek government's new mobile app, 'Kids Wallet', enables parents to oversee their children's screen time and verify their ages on digital platforms. Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou emphasized its importance for child protection online. With parental consent required until age 15, the application addresses concerns about technology's impact on family interactions. Integrated with government services, it allows parents to manage app usage for their children. This government initiative stands out amid more common commercial solutions aimed at limiting screen time among youth.
We are giving parents a powerful tool to protect their children online, said Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou, presenting the new digital instrument in Athens.
This is an application that Greece and Europe needs to confirm children's ages when they use social media, Papastergiou added.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his support for the initiative as well as his concern about the impact of technology on family life.
While similar software tools for limiting time online have been commercially available for decades, it is still unusual to see governments stepping in to provide digital solutions of their own.
