Google's John Mueller stated that he does not believe links affect core updates. In a response on Bluesky, he mentioned that it seems unlikely for links to play a role based on his extensive experience at Google. He added that core updates rely on long-term data, suggesting that very recent information is not considered in the update process. Mueller reiterated that issues lasting in the long term take more time to affect the updates, aligning with Google's approach to data assessment for algorithm changes.
I can't think of how these links would play a role with the core updates. It's possible there's some interaction that I'm not aware of, but it seems really unlikely to me.
Also, core updates generally build on longer-term data, so something really recent wouldn't play a role.
John emphasized that core updates are based on longer-lasting issues, which take longer to be reflected in updates.
In his almost 18 years at Google, John doesn't think core updates use link data for their models.
