Gardai catch hundreds of drivers using their phones behind the wheel in a 24-hour period

A Garda spokesperson emphasized that driving while on the phone distracts the driver, stating it takes their eyes and full attention away from the road, making it 'highly dangerous' and 'potentially life-threatening' for all road users.

This year's figures indicate that 762 motorists have already been caught using their phones while driving, receiving €120 fines and three penalty points, which starkly highlights the ongoing issue of adherence to road safety regulations.

The results from the recent national action day show a four-fold increase compared to the daily average in 2024, with more than 21,500 drivers penalized for using their phones while driving.
