Emmy Nominations: Our Critics on The Bear,' Baby Reindeer' and Delightful Surprises
Briefly

The cupboard feels a little bare. There's plenty of good-enough TV on the prize list, not a lot of great. It was a big year for The Bear in comedy and Shogun in drama series. There has been a lot of talk this year about categorization and category-gaming.
The categories are illegible and increasingly nonsensical. The Emmys wax and wane in terms of legitimacy. It's challenging for a structured awards format to retain meaning when TV genres are more flexible and porous.
The way to eliminate arbitrary category divisions would be just not have them. Unless we resurrect Aristotle to sort this out, I think.
