President Donald Trump announced plans to rename Denali, North America's tallest peak, back to Mount McKinley, citing the former president's contributions to the nation. However, this decision has met with resistance from Alaska's Senators, Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, both Republicans, who advocate for preserving the name Denali, which has historic significance to Alaska Native communities. They emphasize the cultural heritage and respect due to the Koyukon people who named the mountain, arguing that the issue should not be revisited after years of advocacy to honor its rightful name.
You can't improve upon the name that Alaska's Koyukon Athabascans bestowed on North America's tallest peak, Denali: the Great One, she said.
I prefer the name Denali that was given to that great mountain by the great patriotic Koyukon Athabascan people thousands of years ago, Mr. Sullivan said in a video.
For years, I advocated in Congress to restore the rightful name for this majestic mountain to respect Alaska's first people who have lived on these lands for thousands of years.
Mr. Trump surprised many in the state when he announced we will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley where it should be.
