Pete Wells, the restaurant critic for The Times, is stepping down from the job he's had since 2012, after years of episodes that have made him a favorite among our readers. At least some of that fondness comes from his willingness to say the negative things many of us think but keep to ourselves.
Mr. Wells, 64, has been reassessing his relationship with food, which has become complicated in the past two years when health problems started to interfere with eating out. The pandemic made things somewhat easier, by requiring him to eat at home more often.
